Your personal style in one word? Adult-Goth (sorry - it’s two words!)
What’s your current obsession? I’m loving all the leather and faux-leather that’s finally available in plus sizes. Currently, I’m obsessed with mixing a “tough” material like leather with daintier fabric.
Where do you shop? Dorothy Perkins, Forever 21, Asos
What jeans look best on your body? I really don’t do too many jeans. I like the Target Jeggings and I occasionally will wear some Calvin Klein skinnies.
What are your style rules? I just always want to look pulled together. I just won’t leave the house without looking like I at least tried - which isn’t to say that I don’t like to be comfortable because I do - there’s a great space in fashion for clothes that feel good on but also don’t look like you’re wearing a snuggie.
Do you have any tricks that you use to downplay certain areas? I’m a big proponent of body positivity. I think the whole concept of “problem areas” is problematic in itself. Wear what looks and feels good to you - not what people are telling you is best for your shape/size/etc. As for me, I don’t like to wear jeans with shirts tucked in. I just never feel comfortable in that look. So instead I wear lots of dresses, skirts and leggings!
How do you play up your best attribute? I don’t think I have a “best” attribute, but I do love when I get to wear cool shoes and dresses that show off my waist.
You’ve started offering styling services to your readers, what are the most common challenges your readers face? I think people just don’t realize how many options are now available for plus size folks. Many are just used to throwing on a pair of boot-cut jeans and a t-shirt and there are so many ways to dress casually without just throwing clothes on. Sometimes taking that first step might seem so hard - but even having a few key pieces in your wardrobe can really make all the difference.
When you’re helping someone plan their outfits, what do you pay the most attention to? I like to make sure that everyone has a good foundation - and by that I mean some solid basics that you can build on. Once you have a good pair of skinny jeans or a perfect skirt or blazer - then you pile on the trendy shirts and accessories!
What’s your high-low? What items do you tell your clients to save on and when do you tell them to splurge? In general I am very budget-conscious. However, if I’m going to spend lots of money - I’ll do it on items like a classic bag or a really well-fitted blazer or trousers. And I’ve been known to drop some money on some really kick-ass shoes.
What’s the most common mistake you see clients and curvy girls on the street making? I see people hiding in their clothes. Wearing stuff that just doesn’t fit at all. This goes for curvy and non-curvy alike - there are lots of options out there. It might take longer for some folks due to the fashion industry not having unlimited options for certain sizes - but anything can be taken to a tailor - make your clothes work for you!
